HE Vall de la Gallinera Rock Art Interpretation Center began its journey in Benialí, supported by the Provincial Council of Alicante which provided essential funding for the preservation and ongoing development of the complex. The rock shelters of Benialí and Benirrama stand as witnesses to a distant past, now presented with enhanced accessibility and thoughtful museumization efforts.
In total, more than 200,000 euros were allocated to improve access and to modernize the visitor experience. Carmen Sells, the Deputy for Architecture, spoke about the significance of these assets, noting the combination of technical complexity and financial commitment required. She emphasized that the provincial institution is dedicated to ensuring the best possible protection for the sites while making it easier for people to explore them. The aim is clear: safeguard artistic heritage and invite more visitors to engage with it, because broad public appreciation is a strong guarantee of its preservation.
The route that links the two rock art groups spans roughly ten kilometers. It seamlessly combines landscape, environment, history, and culture, offering an experience designed to raise awareness of a heritage that is deeply rooted in the valley’s natural setting. The journey begins at the Benialí town center, serving as a gateway to a landscape where ancient art intersects with living communities and ongoing stewardship.
The opening of this area occurred alongside celebrations for the II Rock Art Conference. Attendees included the Provincial Director of Architecture, together with the district mayor, who were joined by key figures from the regional architecture administration. The group also included Ignasi Mora, the Architecture Area Director for the Diputación; Rafael Pérez, director of the district; Jorge Soler, manager of Mubag; and José Alberto Cortés, manager of the MARQ Foundation. Their presence underscored the collaborative effort behind the project and its role in highlighting regional cultural heritage to a wider audience.
