The Consortium of Museums of the Valencian Community is a major public institution guided by José Luis Pérez Pont from Alicante. It shapes the exhibition program and has grown into one of the world’s most influential cultural hubs, actively supporting artistic activity across the Alicante province in recent years.
In 2023, the organization allocated a substantial budget to programming across the province, totaling 852,595 euros. This funding reflects a record investment in Alicante, with 730,000 euros dedicated to arts initiatives—an increase of 122,000 euros from the previous year.
The Museum Consortium was established in 2013 through the initiative of the Generalitat Valenciana and with the collaboration of the provincial councils of Alicante, Castellón, and Valencia, along with the municipal councils of the three provincial capitals. It includes the Valencia Center del Carme, which surpassed the 300,000-visit mark last year. While exhibits were historically centralized elsewhere, Pérez Pont’s leadership has forged ongoing collaborations that extend beyond the capital to other Alicante municipalities.
Over the past seven years, the consortium’s balance sheet shows that from 2016 to 2022 the province of Alicante hosted 148 exhibitions organized by the consortium, averaging about 21 exhibitions per year and nearly two new openings each month. Across the Valencian Community, the number of exhibitions rose dramatically—from 43 in 2016 to 126 in 2022—demonstrating a tripling of activity during this period.

In tandem with this, the total program in the province over these seven years amounts to 746, averaging 106 exhibitions per year and nearly nine per month. A total of 235 projects were distributed across multiple municipalities. The overall audience reached through the consortium’s programming in Alicante since 2016 is 686,158 people.
The consortium also selected 79 Alicante-based projects through open calls, plus 24 projects exclusive to Cultura Resident, a program focused on supporting artistic residences for creators, both locally at Las Cigarreras and internationally.

Educational and cultural mediation initiatives led to 50 projects and reached 60 education centers, with involvement from 3,500 students. Regarding the scope of Alicante’s investment, the head of the consortium explained that 730,000 euros were directed to the province last year. Of this, 234,000 euros supported Las Cigarreras, which operates under Alicante City Council. The broader budget included 150,000 euros to programming, with 110,000 dedicated to activity planning at MACA, which is also managed by the municipality and received 235,733 euros from the City Council in the previous year.
