The Ministry of Culture, through the Valencia Cultural Institute, announces the Valencia Performing Arts Awards 2022. The event aims to recognize and elevate the professionals behind the Valencian Community’s stage productions, while also encouraging and promoting performing arts created in this autonomous region. The decision will be revealed at the awards ceremony scheduled for November 28, 2022, at the Principal Theatre of Alicante. This venue has hosted the gala previously in 2019 and will alternate with another province each year, with Carles Santos continuing to be associated with the event. These music and audiovisual arts awards were established by the Generalitat in 2018.

In its fifth edition, the ceremony will confer a total of 19 awards, spanning 18 professional categories along with an Honorary Award to recognize a sustained and outstanding contribution to Valencian performing arts over a professional career.

Registration opens from June 20 to July 17, 2022, and submissions are handled through the website ivc.gva.es. Eligible entries include Valencia-based production professionals and artists linked to the shows in question who must be born or reside in the Valencian Community, or who have participated in at least two Valencia production shows since January 2019. Additionally, applicants are required to provide a complete audio-visual recording of the show.

Eligible projects must have premiered in any venue, street space, or public area within the Valencian Community between January 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022. The exception applies to the best show categories in circus and best street arts show, for which the premiere window has been extended from May 1, 2020 to June 30, 2022 to accommodate the production timelines specific to these two disciplines.

Re-registration of a show or a professional who has already participated in a previous Valencia Performing Arts Awards call will not be allowed, nor will entries from productions produced by public institutions in the categories of best theatrical performance, dance, children’s show, street arts, or circus. Nevertheless, the participating artists involved in these productions may compete in all other professional categories.

Two juries will oversee the competition to ensure fairness. The first jury, composed of several representatives from the Valencian cultural realm, will select nominees ranging from seven to nine, with involvement from professional performing arts associations, members of the Valencian Cultural Table, and the Institut Valencià de Cultura (IVC).

The second jury will determine the winners from the nominees proposed by the first jury. It will consist of seven to nine individuals from the Valencian cultural world, appointed by the IVC on grounds of impartiality, critical insight, industry knowledge, and a commitment to equality and regional representation.

The Honorary Award will be chosen directly by the convening institution based on its own criteria and standards.

Interested participants can request the official bases and guidelines from the administering body; details of the call are provided through the Valencian Institute of Culture’s resources. For reference, the instruction document outlining the procedures for the Valencia Performing Arts Awards 2022 is available through official Valencian cultural outlets, and the sponsoring body encourages prospective applicants to consult those materials for precise requirements and timelines.
