Antonio Banderas and a large international crew turned Alicante into a movie set this week for the production of The Road to Bethlehem (Bethlehem Road), a global project that brought together 240 people, including actors and technicians, with 120 local extras from Alicante, according to the Alicante City Council. Santa Barbara Castle welcomed the crew for filming after the dinner hour during the premiere week, transforming the historic site into a backdrop for scenes set in Bethlehem. The production shoot spanned several days in various spots around the city to capture the festive atmosphere of the biblical narrative, bringing to life the journey toward the Nativity.

Bandera plays Herod in this film directed by Adam Anders. The story retells the birth of Jesus with a family-friendly musical approach. The main cast is joined by Fiona Pigeon portraying the Virgin Mary and Milo Manheim in the role of Saint Joseph, forming a notable ensemble that aims to entertain audiences of all ages. This musical adaptation hopes to combine catchy scores with a warm, cinematic portrayal of an ancient tale that resonates across generations.

The Road to Bethlehem marks the directorial debut for producer Adam Anders, known for creating acclaimed works such as a celebrated musical collaboration with Meryl Streep and a popular television series. Anders spoke about the inspiration behind the project, noting that the idea emerged years ago while seeking a Christmas movie experience suitable for family viewing. He described the film as light, bright, and hopeful, with a Bethlehem star-like glow intended to illuminate holiday gatherings. Anders is recognized as a four-time Grammy nominee and a two-time People’s Choice Award winner, achievements that underscore the project’s musical ambition and broad appeal.

Alicante Film Office, affiliated with the Alicante City & Beach Tourist Board, coordinated the filming logistics to accommodate Santa Barbara Castle as a production location after the company expressed interest in the city’s diverse settings. The collaboration ensured a smooth process for permits, scheduling, and on-site operations, reflecting Alicante’s capacity to host major productions and its growing appeal as a location for both national and international projects.

In addition to the 120 Alicante extras, the crew employed roughly thirty local professionals across departments such as editing, sound recording, set logistics, and catering assistance. The presence of a sizable local workforce highlighted the city’s talent pool and its ability to support high-profile shoots while contributing to the local economy through this creative endeavor.

During the press engagement, Mayor Luis Barcala and Vice Mayor Mª Carmen Sánchez emphasized that Antonio Banderas’s involvement represents a significant milestone for Alicante. They noted the city’s rising profile as a filming destination and a magnet for worldwide television series and cinema. The officials highlighted how Alicante’s varied locations, strong infrastructure, and favorable climate create opportunities that expand the city’s tourism and cultural profile, reinforcing the idea that film production can anchor a broader economic and cultural strategy. The spotlight on Alicante as a screen-friendly hub aligns with ongoing efforts to position the city as a trusted, year-round option for productions seeking authentic settings and reliable local support, turning filming into a visible and sustainable tourism asset.
