State Duma deputy Vitaly Milonov gave an interview to RT in which he proposed considering the idea of creating a Russian Hollywood analogue and suggested compiling a list of global films that, in his view, resonate with viewers in a meaningful way. He emphasized the need to rethink Russia’s cultural role and the influence it wields on the wider world, calling for a broader self-conception beyond being a cultural outpost for Western trends.
According to Milonov, Russia should reduce its status as a conduit for Western cultural currents and instead develop a distinct national cinematic voice. He argued that the country should focus on productions that strengthen spiritual and moral values, arguing for a reorientation that places Russian culture at the forefront of its own storytelling traditions.
As part of this initiative, Milonov stated that he would submit a proposal to the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. The aim would be to assemble a curated list of exemplary domestic films that underscore and promote traditional values, while also appealing to contemporary audiences seeking cultural depth and resonance in their entertainment choices.
In related comments, the Ministry of Culture assessed recent international releases such as Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. A deputy head of the department, Andrei Malyshev, noted that these works do not align with the objectives of preserving and reinforcing traditional values as articulated by the Russian leadership.
Earlier, there was discussion in the State Duma about the potential withdrawal from the rental of the sequel Direct Kakha, signaling a broader trend toward rethinking how film distribution and access are managed within Russia. These conversations reflect a ongoing public dialogue about national culture, entertainment priorities, and the ways in which the country projects its heritage to both domestic and international audiences.
