The Sede Universitaria Ciudad de Alicante organizes a cycle of lectures titled Spain in North Africa, examining the Spanish presence in countries situated to the north of the African continent. The sessions lean into history, with esteemed professionals shedding light on pivotal moments from the early decades of the twentieth century, offering clarity about a chapter that shaped regional and global dynamics.

The talks will be led by two specialists in the field: Carlos Sánchez Tárrago, a writer and doctoral candidate at the University of Alicante, and Gerardo Muñoz Lorente, a writer, historical researcher, and member of the Consell Valencià de Cultura. All sessions begin at seven in the evening and attendance is free until capacity is reached.

The opening session falls on a Thursday, the third day of the program, and centers on key moments in the Spanish presence up to the Algeciras Conference of 1906. This gathering explored how the First Moroccan Crisis between France and Germany helped delimit the zones where European powers could exercise influence across the continent, shaping the framework of colonial boundaries that endured for years.

The second session, scheduled for Thursday, October tenth, will analyze the Rif War spanning from 1909 to 1927. This uprising by Rif tribes directly challenged the Spanish authorities and the French empire, ultimately redefining the protectorates of Spain and France and influencing subsequent colonial policy in the region.

All talks take place at the Sede Universitaria Ciudad de Alicante, located at Ramon y Cajal 4.
