The Sovremennik Theater has not issued any official comment regarding Liya Akhedzhakova, a People’s Artist of Russia, and her recent statement that she voluntarily prepared a resignation letter on March 10. Elena Volkova, the theater’s press secretary, told a media outlet that she was not authorized to discuss the actress or her decision.
Volkova said, “Unfortunately, I have no comment on this. I am not authorized to comment on that.”
Earlier, Akhedzhakova informed Novaya Gazeta that she left the theater group on March 10, 2023 of her own accord. The same day, Sovremennik published a declaration asserting that the actor remains a member of the theater’s company and continues to perform there, yet the situation appeared to involve a change in public statements and positions that warranted clarification.
According to a representative from the theater, Akhedzhakova was not terminated from Sovremennik and is still considered an actress of the institution. This official remark was reported by RIA Novosti in the context of ongoing discussions about the actress’s status and future on stage.
In February, it was alleged that leadership at Sovremennik may have prevented Akhedzhakova from taking the stage due to concerns raised by the audience. This claim added another layer of tension to the public narrative surrounding the artist and the institution, highlighting how artistic choices, public perception, and administrative decisions can intersect in a prominent theater setting.
