Patchwork Exhibition in Alicante Showcases 75 Women’s Craft

The Alicante Provincial Council’s exhibition hall opened this Monday at 18.00 to host a vibrant patchwork display. The collection features approximately a hundred handcrafted pieces by members of the Yama Alacant association, all created through a textile technique that stitches together small fabric scraps into larger, cohesive designs.

The range is expansive: quilts, cushions, murals, bags, purses, and tablecloths highlight the thoughtful diversity of the craft. The president of Patch Alacant notes that the time needed for a piece can vary with the quilting technique, with some works taking longer to complete due to their complexity. Many pieces are crafted by hand, as the tiny components are easier to manage with careful, patient stitching. Some projects may be completed by machine, yet the majority rely on handwork because of the intricate, minute fabric fragments involved.

Included this year is a collection titled a collection mini quilt, which tells stories and is carried by members of the Spanish Patchwork Association. This addition underscores the collaborative spirit that runs through Patch Alacant and its wider network.

The exhibition runs daily from today until January 27, with visiting hours from 11.00 to 13.00 and from 17.30 to 20.00. The venue is closed on Sundays due to staff schedules at the Provincial Assembly.

Patch Alacant is a community of 75 women who celebrate fabric as pure art. Meetings take place every Thursday from 17.00 to 19.00 at Calle Serrano 5, within the Association Center of the City Council of Alicante. The group welcomes new members who share a passion for patchwork and textile storytelling, and the leadership regularly travels to other cities for regional events and exhibitions.

Founded in 2001, Patch Alacant previously showcased its work in the main hall of the Provincial Council of Alicante during its 20th anniversary celebration. The enduring appeal of their displays has prompted this new presentation, as the group continues to expand its presence and influence in the regional craft community.

solidarity work

Beyond exhibitions, Patch Alacant members engage in annual solidarity projects. For the past three years they have created a collaborative solidarity quilt to benefit the Spanish Cancer Society. This year’s initiative aims to support the Alzheimer’s Association, continuing a tradition of using textile art to assist charitable causes.

The association’s logo is represented through a pennant-style technique crafted entirely by hand by the members. The design features a grandmothers garden motif, combining hexagons to form rhombuses across a full spectrum of colors, an emblem of the group’s playful yet precise approach to patchwork artistry.
