Netflix has introduced its most affordable plan yet, stepping into the market with a low-cost, ad-supported option. Priced at 5.49 euros per month, thisBasic plan unlocks access to Netflix’s broad catalog of films and series while incorporating short advertisements. The monetization model is designed to balance affordable entertainment with targeted commercial messages, allowing subscribers to enjoy a steady stream of content at a reduced price point.

Set to debut in Spain on November 10, the Basic with Ads plan will roll out in eleven additional countries as well, including Germany, Australia, Brazil, Canada, South Korea, the United States, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico, and the United Kingdom. Availability will begin at 17:00 local peninsula time in each market, aligning with regional content licensing windows and promotional schedules.

Users on this plan will be able to stream a variety of TV shows and movies across a wide range of devices—televisions, smartphones, tablets, and other compatible screens—at a maximum resolution of 720p HD. The goal is to deliver flexible, on-demand entertainment with a light advertising load that keeps ongoing access inexpensive for households choosing an ad-supported model.

Netflix explains the viewing experience on this tier includes an average of four to five minutes of commercials per hour. At launch, ads will typically run 20 seconds each and will appear both at the start of programming and during reruns of episodes and films. This structure mirrors standard ad-supported models found across streaming platforms, designed to minimize disruption while funding lower subscription costs for consumers who prefer not to pay a premium for ad-free access.

On the licensing front, certain titles may not be immediately available due to rights restrictions in specific regions. Netflix has indicated it is actively negotiating and expanding rights to broaden the catalog over time. Offline download capability will not be offered on this plan, but subscribers can switch to alternative plans that include offline viewing or cancel anytime without penalties. The move is part of Netflix’s broader strategy to diversify pricing, satisfy different consumer preferences, and reach a broader audience across markets in North America and beyond.

To support advertisers on this plan, Netflix is introducing a suite of measurement and targeting tools designed to enhance campaign effectiveness. Advertisers will gain access to reach and audience alignment features, as well as verification services from providers such as DoubleVerify and Integral, which will help assess viewability, brand safety, and traffic quality. These capabilities are intended to ensure that ads reach relevant viewers while maintaining a transparent and accountable advertising environment across participating regions.
