Apostle of love and a candid confessor, Luz Casal has remained a touchstone for four decades. Sincere in multiple languages and voices, she embodies the idea that in Galicia, when a door seems closed, many windows open to the soul. Her journey stands as a beacon of self-development, resisting labels and absolutes, a stance she illustrated during the launch of her latest album Las Ventas De Mi Alma.
his last disk You went through a four-year creative process, do you consider yourself a perfectionist?
She would not call herself a perfectionist. Sometimes the quest feels insufficient, prompting a search for new approaches. What truly matters is the final result, not the time it takes. She has never rushed; albums have tended to emerge after a longer arc of touring, performances, and the patience to refine an idea until it feels right.
Do you finally regret something?
Everything has a reason. Some songs resonate more with listeners because they are stronger or more intriguing, but fortunately there isn’t a track that feels frightening or unwelcome. It comes from thoughtful consideration until the decision is certain and the path clear about how to proceed, even when there might be a better way nowhere in sight.
I think about things until I am absolutely sure that this is what I want to do and that I don’t know how to do it better.
Las Ventanas says we are all vulnerable in De Mi Alma.
In one way or another, everyone carries sensitivity. Even those who project ferocity or claim absolute certainty carry a trace of vulnerability. Speaking openly about it only makes the connection stronger.
No one has absolute truth.
That very doubt marks a sign of strength. The sharpest minds are often full of questions and uncertainties.
Luz Casal: “I didn’t wear a skirt on stage for years, I didn’t want to be seen as anything but a singer”
He also talks about not valuing what is important, what is really important in this life?
Friendship, a sturdy compass, remains central — a powerful force that accompanies one through life. If a person is fortunate enough to have a few true friends, that in itself is a gift. It matters to be kind to others and show love, to avoid insignificance and to hold values that make people interesting beings.
She says she doesn’t talk much about her past, preferring to focus on what represents her now.
In her songs, she speaks about herself, her desires, successes and mistakes. She uses the first person with a touch of audacity, and music becomes a channel for freedom, making her feel more outspoken in song than in conversation.
It gives me the feeling that I am more open in my songs than when I speak.
Would you rather everyone interpret the lyrics based on their experience?
Allowing space for interpretation feels more enriching for both the listener and the song itself. An initial impulse sparks an original idea, yet a single song need not be fixed today or tomorrow. The best approach is still unfolding with each creation, inviting personal meaning to emerge.
I always leave the window open for him to interpret each song as I create it.
Even though some songs don’t sound like a ‘rocker’ anymore, do you still consider yourself a rocker?
It’s not about labels or limits. Preference shifts. It can be tiring to define oneself. What remains clear is that she writes with growing confidence, continually composing and co-producing with higher standards, while letting parts of the definition drift elsewhere.
Definitions bore me.
It was wednesday Pride You always preached in the name of love.
On that day, as on all days, love is a vast force that deserves respect for the love people have for one another. Labels—color, weight, height, gender—don’t matter. What matters is pursuing love, in whatever form it takes, and hoping for more love and a touch of miracle in one of the album’s closing songs.
Is there a lack of love in this world?
There is too little understanding and too little empathy. One must strive to see beyond one’s own life, to understand rules and lives different from their own.
Searching for your name on the internet and the first headlines talking about being forgotten and “not being fresh meat” bother you when they ask you to back out?
If someone isn’t excited by their work, they might dwell on it. Luz Casal is mid-career, and music remains a true priority. It isn’t a rational calculation; music simply is life, and it anchors her daily existence.
