Ed Sheeran Drops Eyes Are Closed, First Preview of the Upcoming Studio Album

Ed Sheeran released the track Eyes Are Closed this Friday as the inaugural glimpse of the forthcoming studio project titled – (Abstract). The album is scheduled for release on May 5.

Originally conceived years ago as a love song break, the label shared that the track’s meaning shifted after the British artist endured a painful loss. This moment prompted a reimagining of the song’s message and direction, shaping it into something more personal and reflective.

The track is now available on digital audio platforms. Its release coincides with a video short directed by Mia Barnes that features Sheeran being pursued by a blue monster, symbolizing pain and emptiness in the wake of the loss, set in the still hours of the night.

The artist explains that the song speaks to the experience of losing someone. Each outing can feel like wandering through reminders of what was shared and the moments built together. There are times when stepping away from reality helps ease the ache of loss, but certain memories pull you back in regardless.

The project labeled as – (Subtract) features production by Aaron Dessner of The National. It aired two days after the premiere with Disney+ in mind, offering a documentary-style look that contextualizes the creative process behind the recording, drawn from Sheeran’s personal experiences.
