Elche hosts a vibrant three-day presentation by Hulled Rice Production, the theater troupe from Elche, performing from the 16th to the 18th of this month at L’Escorxador. The show reshapes a Molière classic into a fresh, contemporary experience that respects the historical setting and costumes of the seventeenth century while weaving in modern elements such as new technologies and social networks. The production also foregrounds the role of women in today’s society, balancing humor with thoughtful commentary.
“The humor is lively,” notes Marcos Altuve, the company’s director, “yet it also illuminates how social networks shape everyday life and relationships, revealing how people chase online validation and surface impressions in public spaces.”

This adaptation presents Altuve’s interpretation of the beloved Molière piece, guiding audiences through a journey that remains entertaining while scrutinizing current social phenomena. It uses a witty framework to examine superficiality and excess in historical society and to highlight the pervasive influence of the internet and social media today.

The production invites viewers to reflect on contemporary but universal issues, suggesting that theatre can continue to spark classic-inspired debates in today’s world. It also explores the meeting point between past and present, celebrating the enduring relevance of great theatrical works.
A recent study supported by municipal aid, released December 2023, welcomed the initiative with enthusiasm. Tickets for L’Escorxador are now available at the Gran Teatro for audiences ready to engage with the performance in person or through contemporary viewing options.
