In the Alicante music scene, a project stands out for its bold approach and deep respect for tradition: Cooldesac. Originating from Alicante and founded in 2017, the group has emerged with a concept that aims to reshape traditional music by blending Celtic folk with Valencian influences, pop, and other genres, creating a sound that is both unique and unmistakable. Their music often evokes the spirit of Celtas Cortos, while the singer’s voice carries a sweetness reminiscent of Raquel del Rosario from El sueño de Morfeo.
Tu olor a sal
Their latest creation, “Tu olor a sal,” a song dedicated to the province of Alicante, has become a heartfelt anthem of love and devotion to their homeland. The lyrics transcend a simple tribute to Alicante, capturing the essence of its people, its celebrations, and the natural beauty of the province.
The music video, shot in locations such as Aspe, Agost, Arenales del Sol, Novelda, and Santa Pola, offers a window into the landscapes and culture that have inspired the group from the start. Ruth Pastor Cerdán, from Esparto, lends her voice to this band as they share a message filled with emotion and affection: a video made by and for you, so wherever you are you can listen and feel a surge of joy and pride.
Un estilo mezcla de muchos estilos
Instrumentation marks one of Cooldesac’s defining traits, using a wide range of timbres from transverse flute and violin to less conventional Celtic folk instruments like the duduk, bouzouki, moraharpa, and dolçaina. This blend not only enriches their sound but also reflects the cultural diversity of Alicante and its surroundings.
The repertoire spans a broad spectrum of styles, from traditional Irish music to Scottish, Galician, and Breton tunes, including reels, jigs, polkas, hornpipes, airs, and muñeiras. What truly sets the group apart is their ability to reinterpret these genres through modern music, incorporating Valencian folk arrangements such as passacarrers and cercavilas, boleros, dances, fandangos, and jotas, demonstrating a vision of reimagining folk music.
Their debut studio album, “In other words,” released in December 2019, showcased their musical personality, exploring Irish and Galician folk with touches of contemporary genres like pop and rumba. “The flight of the earls,” their first original track, demonstrates their knack for composing music that feels both traditional and new.
Tradición y modernidad
The Cooldesac project began with the aim of exploring Celtic music and its interaction with Valencian folk, introducing new instruments and techniques drawn from classical music, hybrid rhythms, and modern styles. Through their work, Cooldesac Folk invites audiences to see musical tradition in a fresh and exciting light, without fear of experimentation and fusion across influences.
Participation in festivals like Cartagena Folk, Sete Sóis Sete Luas, and Artenbitrir, along with performances in renowned cultural venues, reflect growing interest and acceptance of their musical offering. With each concert, Cooldesac Folk shares not only music but also celebrates the cultural richness of Alicante and its traditions, inviting everyone to experience the joy and pride of belonging to the best land in the world.
