Another striking theme from the survey is how Russians classify Cheburashka. A large share, 75 percent, labeled the creature as an enigmatic being whose true nature remains unclear. About 15 percent saw Cheburashka as a real animal, and within this group, opinions diverged on what species the character most resembles: 47 percent compared Cheburashka to a koala, 33 percent likened him to a monkey, and 14 percent saw a bear. A smaller portion, 5 percent, identified Cheburashka as alien, 3 percent as human, and 2 percent as divine. The spectrum of interpretations underscores how much Cheburashka has become a canvas for imagination.

Birthplace and origin were also explored in the survey, with 51 percent of respondents placing Cheburashka’s origins in Russia. Other countries and regions were cited as potential homelands, including Africa at 27 percent, Europe at 11 percent, and Australia at 8 percent. American origins received support from 3 percent of participants. Beyond geography, preferences for Cheburashka’s favorite foods were collected, revealing a fondness for sweets by 43 percent, nuts by 32 percent, milk by 13 percent, honey by 12 percent, and a nod to orange as a treat as well.

The survey period spanned March 17 through March 21, 2023, and drew participation from 126,407 users with a gender split of 54 percent male and 46 percent female. Over the weekend that followed release, the Cheburashka film on the Okko platform surpassed one million views, marking a milestone as the most successful premiere in the history of online cinema for the service. This momentum emphasizes how an animated character can transition from childhood icon to a shared cultural moment that resonates with a broad audience.

Across the board, the data suggests Cheburashka has not only endured but expanded its cultural footprint. Audiences recount Cheburashka’s world with a blend of nostalgia and curiosity, turning the character into a touchstone for conversations about identity, imagination, and the playful margin between fact and fantasy.
