The HE Club Information expands its exhibition program with a new presentation from the Balsalobre Study Projects for 2022-2023, opening this week to set a contemporary tone. The event brings together the talents and students of the School of Photography’s Practical Photography Projects course, led in Alicante by Carlos Balsalobre. The evening anchors a dialogue about how young creators translate personal visions into material photographic work, inviting spectators to engage with a spectrum of styles, techniques, and meanings embedded in the images.
The central concept of this edition embraces variety in appearance and intent. Five photographers participate, and the curators aim to present distinctive voices for each, breaking away from conventional expectations. The aim is introspection and clear communication about what the photographers wish to convey — what resonates deeply, what wounds, what provokes excitement, and what questions are posed to viewers. The school’s director and mentor, who has guided eight iterations of the program, emphasizes that the project culminates in an exhibition that mirrors the current landscape of contemporary photography as produced by students.
The participating photographers include Cassandra May Byrne, Fernando Fernández de Córdoba, Peter Vicent, Sergio Rodríguez Roselló, and Víctor Moreno Sempere. Each contributor presents projects across diverse genres and media, ranging from photographic essays to portraits, installations, and photographic sculptures, illustrating the breadth and versatility of the students’ approaches.
According to the curators, the show communicates through a modern rhetoric and a variety of expressive channels. The intention is to invite visitors to move through the works, observe carefully, and let new meanings emerge from the conversations each piece initiates with the audience. The event also stands as a testament to the high quality produced by many participants who had not previously exhibited, underscoring the strength of the school’s ongoing program.
Five students display their projects alongside Carlos Balsalobre, who appears on the right as audiences are invited into a curated experience that blends documentary approaches with more experimental forms. The exhibition frames contemporary art as a space for reflection, urging viewers to consider how different visual languages can coexist and interact within a single show.
Among the projects, Cassandra May Byrne explores collaboration with an animal protection organization, presenting a stark black-and-white photographic series that addresses animal welfare and raises awareness about abuse. Víctor Moreno Sempere conducts intricate investigations into recent femicide cases tied to gender-based violence in Alicante, conveying findings through carefully structured imagery and narrative cues. In other works, Peter Vicent focuses on his mother, delivering a poignant and visually striking presentation, while Sergio Rodríguez Roselló experiments with three-dimensional aesthetics that question how perception shifts with the viewer’s position. Fernando Fernández de Córdoba introduces a sculptural installation reflecting on the evolving dynamics of the Alicante art market, offering a tactile perspective on contemporary trends.
The exhibition runs through October 15, with viewing hours posted along Avenida del Doctor Rico at 17. A guided tour is planned for September 29, inviting audiences to gain deeper insights into the works and the ideas driving them. The show invites residents and visitors to consider how emerging photographers interpret the world around them and how a single frame can serve as a doorway to broader discussions about art, society, and personal experience.
