Auction Highlights: Rare Russian Editions and Literary Signatures

The first posthumous edition of a renowned Russian poet’s poems led the sales, reaching 850,000 rubles at auction. The event, reported by DEA News through the auction house press service, drew attention to a historic four-volume set from 1842 to 1844, published in Saint Petersburg by Tip. Ilya Glazunov and Comp. The volumes were accompanied by a lithographic portrait of the poet created from a Russian drawing by Kirill Gorbunov, a respected artist, lithographer, and academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts.

In addition to this landmark edition, other celebrated works were sold. A novel by a major Russian writer, published during the 19th century, fetched 280,000 rubles and carried a mysterious inscription written after the author’s death: from Charon to the newborn Nikolai on February 11, 1881. This inscription has become part of the book’s mystique and value at auction.

Another notable sale featured a popular children’s edition: Malchish-Kibalchish and The Story of His Strong Word, with drawings by a Soviet painter. This set, published by a prominent house, realized 340,000 rubles, more than double the original price. The same auction catalog highlighted The Game, a work by a Russian avant-garde author, which sold for 100,000 rubles. The collection also included a rare illustrated edition by the painter Vladimir Konashevich, underscoring the enduring appeal of illustrated literary works for collectors.

A separate highlight involved a rare signature associated with a well-known American tech pioneer, which appeared at auction with a price tag of $95,000. The record demonstrates the wide interest in iconic authors, artists, and signatories that cross national boundaries and attract modern collectors in North America and beyond.
