Installation, video art, performance and now dance are the disciplines highlighted in the new call that invites artists to participate in Altea’s vibrant art scene. Nit de l’Art stands as one of the municipality’s flagship events, weaving together the cultural programme and the open studios initiative. The sixth edition is scheduled to unfold from June 1 to June 3, inviting audiences to witness a dynamic spectrum of creativity across the town.

In a spirit that elevates culture and contemporary creation, the Altea City Council presents Nit de l’Art as a living space for experimentation and the shared journey between creators and the public. Two concurrent calls are open: Projects for individual or collaborative proposals by plastic and visual artists, performers, and dancers of any nationality and age. This edition will take place outdoors across various city locations, complementing the open studios. The aim is to showcase the workshops of artists and artisans residing in Altea, forming a curated route on the afternoon of June 2 and the morning of June 3, with opportunities to host public events at the artists’ own venues.

One of the proposals of Nit de l’Art invites public participation and collaboration, reflecting a long-standing commitment to inclusive cultural experience.

Deadline and submission details for both calls are published for those wishing to participate. Applications open on Wednesday, February 1 and close on March 17, 2023. Founding documents for both programs are available on the Altea City Council website or through the organization’s coordinating partner. The cultural council member and the project’s coordinating lead provided the basics for the sixth edition during the briefing held on Tuesday.

Altea celebrates a long weekend of art

Participating artists and the public can look forward to a weekend where art interweaves with street life, public spaces, and intimate showcases. The event integrates performances, installations, and collaborative works that unfold along public venues and designated studios across the town.

500 euros per project

From the received proposals, a selection committee will choose five projects for support. Each selected proposal will receive a grant of 500 euros to help cover production and transport costs, ensuring that the artistic vision can be realized in the shared outdoor spaces. Even though works may have been completed before submission, the grants support continued public engagement and accessibility. The initiative welcomes artists from all nationalities, with many entrants traditionally hailing from across the region, and occasionally drawing participants from the United States, Vietnam, and other countries.

In recent editions, Altea Art Night has drawn an audience that values a broad geographic mix, fostering cross-cultural exchanges while highlighting local talent and guest artists alike.

Places include Esplanade TRAM Altea (Friday, June 2) and Plaça de l’Esglèsia de Nuestra Señora del Consuelo (Saturday, June 3), as well as Plaça de Carmelina Sánchez Cutillas, Mirador Francesc Martínez i Martínez, and Mirador Carrer Santa Bárbara. These venues host interventions, performances, and participatory works, creating a multi-location experience that guides attendees through the evolving program across the two days.

jury

The evaluation panel for the projects comprises a mix of cultural leadership, curatorial expertise, and regional artistic experience. Members include a culture consultant, the curator of Nit de l’Art for 2023, a municipal cultural technician, a multidisciplinary artist who also serves in a leadership role at a regional university, and representatives from the university’s fine arts department. This diverse jury collaborates to ensure a fair, transparent selection process that recognizes a wide range of artistic practices and voices.
