The District Culture Secretary outlined several issues as urgent priorities that require immediate attention. The rehabilitation and the appointment of the director at the Teatro Principal de Alicante were singled out as outstanding matters that prompted the Generalitat to insist they be addressed without delay at the next owners meeting on 14 October.
López, who took part in the presentation of the program at the Arniches Theater in Alicante, acknowledged the need to continue discussions. He noted that the work does not end with formalities; it is crucial to keep talking about these topics until concrete steps are taken.
He commented that the meeting to approve the Director’s programming was productive. However, with the theater currently open, operational needs and rehabilitation requirements must be clearly addressed to ensure smooth operations and the realization of developable conditions.
Regarding the Generalitat’s bid to acquire parts of the Alicante City Council and Banco Sabadell, López stated that this initiative remains in effect. At the time, the City Council perceived the proposal as aggressive and defended itself with strong vehemence. The proposal, he added, was sincere, given that it involved the technical capacity and experience of the Generalitat to manage the theater under the guidance of directors from Valencia and Castellón, with the aim of fully assuming the management of the Alicante project.
Generalitat reviews the Director’s acquisition of the municipal division.
In López’s view, the path forward should be pragmatic and collaborative. The emphasis is on seeking formulas that allow all parties to cooperate effectively. He believes it is feasible for the three entities to work honestly and professionally, while ensuring that the selection of the director follows a democratic process. The possibility of having two or three candidates would simply remain in the background as a practical option rather than a hurdle.
It is worth noting that September marked a public turn in Generalitat’s strategy when it announced a proposal for the Alicante City Council to acquire its stake in the theater after a Board of Directors meeting at the coliseum.
Following the information about this offer from Valencia, the then Regional Secretary of Culture, Rachel Tamarit, together with the minister at the time, Vincent Marza, the mayor Luis Barcala, and Cultural Council Member Anthony Manresa, publicly considered that the Alicante City Council would initiate a bid to purchase the property from Generalitat, provided that Generalitat took an initial step. At present, such an action has not materialized.
