Alicante Juan Gil-Albert Announces 2023 Awards and Research Scholarships

The Cultural Institute of Alicante Juan Gil-Albert announced a new call for Awards and Research Scholarships 2023. A total of 48,500 euros will be distributed among selected works from 14 modalities. The budget was reorganized to strengthen research projects in the social sciences and humanities, expanding the number of works in this category from two to five. Each winning project in this category will receive up to 8,000 euros, reflecting the emphasis on supporting preresearch efforts and scholarly activity.

The restructuring comes as fewer offers are available in other aid categories such as doctoral thesis awards, master’s degrees, and end-of-degree grants, and in some cases these programs were discontinued. As in the previous year, funds are redirected toward research grants, which typically attract around forty applications each year, with only two calls selected previously. The current plan concentrates the majority of the prize pool, about 40,000 of the 48,500 euros, into the research scholarship category.

The submission window remains open until March 10 and covers papers and projects presented in various formats. The program will allocate two doctoral thesis awards, each up to 2,000 euros; two final master’s projects (TFM) with up to 500 euros each; and two graduation projects (TFG) with up to 250 euros each. In addition, three grants will support the development of three doctoral theses, each worth 1,000 euros, and five grants will fund research projects with a maximum of 8,000 euros per project. These allocations aim to strengthen the research landscape and broaden opportunities for scholars at different stages of study.

Special attention to the province

Julia Parra, Vice President of Culture, explains that the goal of this call is to foster studies with a meaningful impact on uncovering facets of regional culture. The program seeks to provide support and visibility for the work conducted by researchers and academics from local universities.

This initiative aims to contribute to social science and humanities research within the province of Alicante. It also supports the development of complementary experiences and research attitudes that align with teacher education. The program pays particular attention to matters connected with the state of Alicante, including its linguistic, literary, humanistic, scientific, artistic, and historical heritage.

Last year three projects reached the maximum award, though one winner withdrew due to time constraints. The awarded projects were showcased at Casa Bardín and included topics such as the Francoist concentration camps in the Alicante province, led by Eloy Enciso, Marina Perales, and Juan Francisco Ruvira, and a study on the functional role of industrial heritage in tourism, led by Maria del Rosario Navalon, Elisa Trinidad, and Arturo Jimenez.

The selection balances attention to projects conducted in both Valencian and Spanish, ensuring broad linguistic and cultural representation across the province.

The project proposal form can be obtained at Casa Bardín Secretariat and the institute’s website. Citations for the program and its outcomes can be found through the Instituto de Alicante Juan Gil-Albert, with official information detailing categories, deadlines, and award amounts.
