Alicante Gastronomica Solidaria expands its reach through volunteer-led food relief

A project born from volunteers within the Alicante hospitality scene emerged at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic to meet the urgent food needs of the most vulnerable residents. Since its inception, the initiative has delivered more than 520,000 complete meals across thirty municipalities in the province. It has relied on the energy and dedication of 2,100 volunteers, known locally as #HeroesWithApron, and the generous support of around 650 #EmpresasConAlma, which primarily contribute food. The effort continues to be a beacon of community solidarity as it grows with each passing day.

Gema Amor, serving as president, will describe how the association operates during a talk this Wednesday at 19:30 at Casa Bardín. Alicante Gastronómica Solidaria functions as a nonprofit organization built on philanthropic principles and a commitment to reach every part of the region. The project is steered by the Alicante Chamber of Commerce and the Diputación de Alicante, with support from Turisme Generalitat Valenciana and several business tourism associations including APHA, APEHA, ARA, HOSBEC, ABRECA, AAHTC, AETE, and ACyRA, along with CEV. Private companies from Alicante also participate through CEDELCO and the Social Assistance Departments of various municipalities such as Alicante, Alfaz del Pi, Relleu, Altea, Sella, and Finestrat. This broad collaboration reflects a robust public-private partnership that strengthens local food security and community resilience.

The initiative illustrates the impact of coordinated efforts between government agencies, local businesses, and civil society. By pooling resources and expertise, the program has fed thousands of families each day, turning a difficult period into an opportunity to reinforce social bonds. Alongside meal delivery, the group has launched training and employment programs aimed at people who face barriers to work, including those at risk of social exclusion. These courses help participants gain skills, confidence, and job opportunities while contributing to the community’s overall well-being. The project’s continued momentum demonstrates how thoughtful collaboration can address immediate needs while building lasting pathways to economic inclusion and nourishment for residents across the region.
