Alcoy and Alicante Art Exhibitions: Floating Memory and Castle Histories

IVAM-CADA of Alcoy (Media Room on the 3rd floor) Carrer Rigobert Albors 8, Alcoy until January 29

Luisa Pastor, an artist from Alicante, has spent years challenging the capitalist logic that underpins much of the modern economy through his plastic works. By deconstructing old documents and accounting records, Pastor breaks up the ledgers where business people record income and expenses, offering an alternative language that births a poetic and political framework. An archive-like project line-by-line recasts the city’s economic records, inviting a fresh memory of the people and their shared history.

The exhibition foregrounds the idea of “floating,” a move away from weight and gravity to create a sense of lightness in the works. The project earned the Llançadora grant, supporting large-scale sheets of paper assembled from overlapping planes and disparate fragments, forming new visual constellations.

“History of Alicante. Between two castles” gathers the comic of the same name, created by Naín Sousa, presented in a panoramic exhibition format curated by the Alicante Department of Historical Memory and released this year. The work chronicles the city’s story from its origins at Las Cigarreras to the 1938 bombing at the Central Market. A local gallery owner transformed the comic into a visually striking pictorial piece, weaving through seven self-contained chapters with a bold, cohesive arc.

Manolo Casar, a gallery owner from Alicante, led the effort to translate the textual narrative into a painting-driven experience, ensuring the project resonates with a broader audience while preserving the integrity of Sousa’s storytelling. The exhibition situates a city’s memory within a sequence of images that invite reflection on past traumas and resilience.
