“Hit” is a sincere series about the history of Russian music. Why is it worth watching? The premiere of the “Hit” documentary series, which tells the history of Russian music, took place on 25.10.2024, at 16:30.

Reviewing documents is a difficult and even thankless job. At least in relation to the genre itself, which already receives undeservedly little attention in Russia. The texts here are often either verbatim transcriptions (thus stealing the audience from the projects) or they are too general and not about anything (thus not giving the projects enough viewers).

So I’ll start with the personal and some magic of numbers.

In 2007, I turned 13 and received an iPod Classic from my parents for my birthday – a dream player with an absolutely insane 160 GB of memory at the time. I didn’t even manage to fill it a third of the way (a year later, the happy owner of the knife put it to my throat and also became the happy owner of a miracle player), but I still managed to install about all the rap albums that can be downloaded there. There was no other music for me at the time, who was actively involved in basketball and growing up on the streets as a teenager, so I had an early conversation with my mother, who was clearly terrified of the impact rap had on a fragile brain. or it was supposed to happen later.

This happened quite early – even before Guf’s entire discography was completely worn out. My mother, a one-time Bogdan Titomir fan who gave up trying to find at least something without obscenities in her sound library and also cursed her father, continued: “I’m not banning you from your “bo-bo-bo”, But don’t ignore human music either. Your grandmother is a conservatory graduate, I don’t expect any interest in Tchaikovsky, but at least listen to… At least “Combination”. We met your father at your concert. “This is our story, the hits of our youth, maybe one day it will even be made into a movie,” he said.

I finally listened to “Combination”, but much later – while preparing for an interview with Alena Apina and at the same time taking my mother to the oncology center. “American Boy” and “The Accountant” didn’t impress me much, but she was delighted to know that her son would be talking to the idol of his youth. Contrary to predictions, a movie about “Combination” has not been made yet, but a TV series has been made (you can read more) Here). The last episode of the comedy-drama was released on October 24 – the day my mother turned 55 (thanks to the doctors, without the “will not”). And of course he looked at her – but he was already alone; He and his father divorced a long time ago.

In parallel with the finale of the series (a good project, but still artistic, with all the pros and cons that arise), the premiere of “Combination” and “Hit”, a documentary with Bogdan Titomir, took place. Russian rap of the 2000s (the same “boo -boo-boo”) and audio tiktokers promoted through social networks.

This is the most intense story about people, influencers and bangers in the Russian popular (broadly speaking) scene from the 90s to the present. Its authors were the duo Zakhara Chavkin and Kirill Ashumov (“Pure”, “Infidels”), and among the directors was Rodion Chepel, creator of the high-profile documentary “Leaves”. New Look”, “God Ex Machina”, “Pelevin” and “Right to Fire”. Their efforts resulted in a kind of musical version of the show “Namedni”, just as textured and structured but also dynamic and colorful. And, as expected, a lot of archives with its imagery (from tanks on the streets of Moscow during the coup to coronavirus-trick concerts), nostalgic and modern songs, as well as unexpected stories from direct participants – about how the stagnant Soviet scene was rejuvenated and renewed along with the country.

The project included a total of eight half-hour episodes dedicated to different decades, and again not only in the context of music: the ostentatious times of Yeltsin with his crimes and the smell of freedom emerge here from the same history “Combination”, the group “Kar-Maine” and the main music channel of that time MTV, the well-fed 20s – through the prism of the underground hip-hop industry and pop music that conquered the Western charts, the tenth era and our time – stories of young original artists who were ashamed to copy and created something truly their own.

The cast of “Hits” consists entirely of stars from different eras that influenced Russian music: from Nike Borzov to Valeria, from Tatiana Ivanova to MIA BOYKA, from Shura to Boulevard Depo, from Dmitry Malikov to Feduk, from Yulia Savicheva To Vanya Dmitrienko. A nice bonus here are people who did not perform on stage, but made an invaluable contribution to the industry – Fyodor Bondarchuk, one of the main music video directors of his time, producers Joseph Prigozhin, Pasha and Alexander Tolmatsky, music journalists Oleg Karmunin and Nikolai Redkin (special respect to him), presenter Yana Churikova, most recently Zhora Kryzhovnikov, popularizer of “Grey Night”, and actress Anastasia Ukolova, who played Apina.

All – accompanied by extremely cheerful editing in the best traditions of Tony Scott (be prepared that in a minute up to 10 recognizable faces with individual lines will appear in the frame) – with sincere stories and vivid memories told on camera, recreating different musical eras of modern Russia .

They will recreate it in such a way that everyone will find something of their own: someone will feel nostalgia for the era when “bo-bo-bo” and players were repressed on the streets, and at the same time will learn a little more about the hits and authors of their parents’ youth. Some say that modern music, even if it’s “boo-boo-boo”, is actually no worse than what was once made. And of course he will remember how he spent his youth listening to “The Accountant” and Bogdan Titomir.
