British prosecutors have closed the criminal case against former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. writes News 3.
The Crown Prosecution Service has decided to drop the case against Weinstein, saying there was “no realistic prospect of his conviction”.
“We will always encourage all potential victims of sexual assault to come forward and report it to the police and will initiate criminal investigations wherever the legal criteria are met,” the prosecutor’s office said.
Prosecutors had previously authorized police to bring charges against Weinstein over the alleged assault, which occurred in London in 1996.
Weinstein is currently in custody in New York, awaiting a retrial on rape and assault charges in Manhattan.
In total, more than 90 women have publicly accused Weinstein of rape, sexual assault or harassment. He has denied all the charges and denied having sex without their consent. He is serving a 23-year prison sentence.
