up and down

In 1972, journalist Frank Victor Dawes was news director of the radio division of the BBC. In April of the same year, he went on vacation with his family after he published an advertisement in The Daily Telegraph asking domestic workers and employers in England to share their experiences with him. Returning from the break, Dawes was barely able to open her front door due to the mail piling up in response to her request.

up and down

When these life stories stopped coming in, Dawes gathered over 700 stories and material for a gripping book called Never Ahead of Servants, which reads like an amateur social anthropologist’s fieldwork but also reads like the tenth show. However much the concept of class manifests itself under other pseudonyms, it remains not only the constant of history, but continues to function as one of the most coherent and best works in explaining the inevitable and invincible asymmetry that shapes man. relationships.

Considering housework as an educational activity, never bury any temptation before servants that can survive, and don’t destroy the myth of the good lord and the smug servant. In light of Dawes’s research, sugar-coating what is nothing more than a school of slavery seems unlikely, although sometimes there is room for gratitude and even nostalgia in the expressions of employees and employers with a lot of learned helplessness. A time when certain certainties could still be preserved under the logic of paternalism, in the case that concerns us, occupied by a hideous prejudice of a sexual nature.

Discipline the men, women, boys and girls who surrender to service in exchange for little more than shelter and food, through regular programs of manu militarism, conventional directions of action, and the effective delivery of their education, will, and duties. In the context of Victorian and Edwardian England, their desire for the will and discretion of an aristocracy and a middle class who based their status on the view of the majority of the population as slave labor forces them to make a painful reconsideration. It is around patterns of control and submission, thanks to which wealthy societies can build and maintain their strengths such as comfort, luxury, and laziness.

a painful affliction

Not in vain at this time, when tight phalanxes of the young and the not-so-young survive in the precariousness of job vacancies and the new semantics of the unfortunate class struggle. Servants shine a harsh, cruel, and violent light on the most terrible, painful scourge of any society, including ours: inequality.
