A book with a footprint

Architects with traces are called Valencian architecture, through their heroes (1768-1971). It is the book written by Alberto Peñín Ibáñez and Francisco Taberner Pastor, both architects. Organized by the Valencian Community College of Architects and three Regional Colleges; likewise, with the participation of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos. It has only recently emerged as it was last January when it saw the light. However, management and development are framed in sanitary constraints due to the pandemic and the well-known subsequent consequences of all considerations. In the Alicante region, Santiago Varela, Andrés Martínez Medina, Justo Oliva, Gaspar Jaén, Vicente Vidal and Juan Calduch collaborated.

The two authors identified the purpose of the publication in the preface. In other words, it is aimed to announce the duties of architects who have left their mark in the city recently, and it is necessary to add their presence not only in the city but also in the society. The year that created the first history under the sub-title in the renewed framework inspired by the Enlightenment by following the criteria that guide the profession, organized within the San Carlos and San Fernando Fine Arts Academies. A hundred years later, the formation of the discipline assumed a more technical character, which was introduced on the occasion of the establishment of the Schools of Architecture at the Universities of Madrid and Barcelona and the consequent changes in professional approaches. The third term, which is the last term, covers the scope of the association, which was founded in 1931 and until 1971, when the Valencia School of Architecture was first introduced.

Three hundred and nineteen pages of the publication consist of different sections. The longest section describing the criteria in each of the three periods is the section with 154 heroes from the reviews of the architects who left their mark. They belong to the 72 provincial districts of Valencia; 41 of them belong to the province of Alicante; They belong to Castellón 21; On the other hand, there are 20 whose regional situation is not ours.

The group of 41 professionals from the province of Alicante, which the authors of the book highlight and call the Alcoy core, formed in or from the region in Alcoy, is no doubt worth mentioning, fifteen days. It’s understandable given the significant pressure from the Alcoy community for decades. The profession of innovation of industrial origin and its interest in the assimilation of new architectural movements of the transition years between the end of the eight hundredth century and the beginning of the next century, with the inclusion of forms of modernism. Not forgetting that Alcoy was the first city to have the first Geometric Alignment Plan, the seed for subsequent Expansion Plans, the work of Jorge Gisbert in 1849. For the second population, both plans were drawn in 1853 by Vicente Montero de Espinosa.

A large number of professionals were born in the province and were applied effectively and accredited in the dominant social class, preferably within the geographical framework in question. Their works survived independently of the stylistic currents that motivated them. Some were more academic and conservative in form. Others, on the contrary, adhered to solutions that were considered avant-garde in the 1930s, and above all after the modern recovery of the 1960s. In addition to the above mentioned, it is worth remembering the architects Jover and Gadea, Miguel Francia. , Jose Guardiola Picó, Jose Cascant. Chápuli Guardiola, José Ramón Mas y Font, Sánchez Sedeño or Fajardo Guardiola; The Cort Botí brothers, however, the first professor of Urbanism, César worked in Madrid. Also, Francisco Munoz; Antonio Serrano Peral and Serrano Bru; Juan Vidal Ramos and Vicente Valls Gadea; Timoteo Briet and Francisco Carbonell Abad, Juan Antonio Garcia Solera; Jose Gonzalez Altes; until they complete the sum of those who act professionally and leave their mark on local architecture and society, and sometimes beyond.

Although they were born here, some carried out their studies in other towns and regions. This was the case of Ignacio Haan, who entered San Fernando, where he was educated at the age of twelve, and practiced his profession under the Archdiocese of Toledo, then an enormous religious district. Such was the case of Miguel Abad Miró, collaborator in the work of Miguel López, he developed his craft in Seville, was the director of his school and, in turn, the dean of the architects of the Colegio de Andalucía Occidental y Badajoz. Or the assignment of Dianense José Luis Romany Aranda, whose work is well-known in Madrid.

Many people from other provinces left traces of the constructions. It was Juan Guardiola Gaya who had extensive and well-known work across the state. José Luis Fernández del Amo promoted from the Colonization Institute, in his projects and constructions renewed with new almost organic air, outdated solutions advocated from the Destroyed Territories, for example the towns of San Isidro and El Realengo in Vega Baja. Coming from Barcelona was the work of Ricardo Bofill and Taller de Arquitectura, which included proposals for a city in space, brought to life at La Manzanera de Calpe. Also the office of Oriol Bohigas, author of the promenade on the Levante coast in Benidorm and a Partial plan in Muchamiel.
