Mikhail Piotrovsky, General Director of the State Hermitage, said access to world-class masterpieces such as the Mona Lisa should be limited. He told this to the broadcast RBC.
According to him, museum visitors should be allowed to view such works in groups.
“You should be allowed to see such paintings in groups. In time, everyone should transition to the limited access practice of Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper in Milan. That’s how limited the reach of Alexander Nevsky’s cancer, for example, will be. It should be the same with the Mona Lisa,” Piotrovsky explained.
He also added that the level of attendance at the Hermitage had returned to pre-pandemic levels as the public “traveled less to the Maldives and went to the museum more often due to known circumstances.”
