Independent distributor Bitters End will release Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer in Japan. This was reported by Variation.
Prior to this, the Toho-Towa company, the traditional distributor of Universal films, had refused to distribute the film in the country, fearing its sensitive subject matter for the Japanese public.
Bitters End, on the other hand, described Nolan’s film as an exciting drama with a true story and stated that the director’s new work is the best of his entire career. The distributor also added that the film will compete for major awards worldwide next year.
“Oppenheimer” is scheduled to be released in Japan in 2024.
The reason why Christopher Nolan’s film took a long time to reach Japan was due to historical factors – the country’s authorities are sensitive about the subject of the film, which is dedicated to the creation of nuclear weapons and its author, Robert Oppenheimer. The atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 killed hundreds of thousands of civilians.
In September reportedOppenheimer grossed $912.7 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing biopic in history.
