A tribute to classic detective novels

Arturo Pérez Reverte changed the recording again. Revolución, about Pancho Villa’s Mexico and World War II in the 1940s, when Italian combat divers damaged Allied ships in the Bay of Gibraltar. It must be said that he offers us a novel after The Italian, which takes place during World War II. , delicious and smart. It’s so fun. A paean to traditional crime novels, a manifesto in itself. Novels in which the reader and the author engage in a duel of intelligence. Novels in the Nordic noir style, far from the fashion that has existed for decades. That of returning, tortured investigators confronted by the murderers of terrible crimes. The ones where the author sometimes cheats and there is no shortage of sleaze.

But no: the final issue is an admiring monument, with a dash of parody, to the adventures of Sherlock Holmes from the mind of Conan Doyle. Also true of the novels of Ágata Christie. And many more. And this appears in detective literature as two or three copies of the so-called locked room case mysteries. In other words, they find a body and the goal is to figure out how someone could get in, kill, and get out. A problem of logic, a problem of creativity. In this story, references are made frequently to cinema and Doyle’s novels, and many real names from cinema, art, society and literature are included. Although it may seem light at first glance, it is actually a reconsidered book with substance, various reading levels, and a strong story: about very different, different people who are trapped in a place against their will. He sees how crimes begin to be committed. All suspicious. Ten little blacks, yes. It’s all told with elegance and subtle, enveloping dialogue. The reader wants more and Reverte gives it to them. The reader infers, the writer guides or disorients. It doesn’t seem predictable. A reader encounters the following situation: In the early summer of 1960, on a small island near Corfu, nine guests of the only hotel in the isolated area are stranded in a storm. In the midst of tranquility, cheerful breakfasts, leisurely meetings, walks and a certain sophistication, luxury and elegant boredom, Englishman Edith Mander, staying with a friend, appears dead in a compartment used for entertainment on the beach. locker room or storage room for beach items. Everything points to a suicide, of course, but another of the guests, Hopalong Basil, a declining actor in his sixties (after Basil Rathbone) who became world famous for his role as Sherlock Holmes in films dozens of times, begins a murder investigation. His detective nose was acquired in acting. He was also encouraged by the rest of the guests and helped by a strange Watson, who was none other than a Spaniard named Foxá, who knew by heart the adventures, sayings, sayings, philosophy and methods of Sherlock Holmes. Nothing is as it seems, and drawing conclusions from what you see is not easy, except for some. We won’t give spoilers or say how many bodies turn up. The catalog of guests and suspects includes two waiters, the hotel owner, a German, the film producer who brought Hopalong Basil to the island after traveling on his yacht, and a singer. Opera keeps him company but keeps an eye on Basil, a former conscientious drinker who falls in love with movie divas, is the party partner of people like Errol Flyn. He smokes a cigar. The reader quickly identifies with the mission given to the hero. And he sees a kind of twilight role that can revive his vital impulse and enthusiasm. This isn’t a movie, it’s real. However, the dialogues learned from the character he has played for such a long time can be useful. Also their methods and implications. And its appearance. And I’ve seen a lot of crimes, even in fiction. Dear reader, the worldly dialogues between Hopalong and Foxá, Holmes and Watson, are particularly simple. Foxá is also a detective in his own right: he makes a living writing newsstand novels in sixties Spain, in which he traces mysteries for undemanding readers using pseudonyms. Here he also faces a challenge: to find a better argument than the ones he himself presents in his books. Meanwhile, a traditional Foxá full of surprises. Or not. A classic and full-fledged mystery. More than one.
