An android robot has taken over the conductor’s chair in Seoul to lead the performance of the South Korean National Orchestra. It has been reported Reuters.
The two-armed robot, developed by the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology, made its debut at the Korea National Theater, where prominent musicians from the country’s national orchestra performed. This is the first attempt to use artificial intelligence in Korea.
“The conductor’s movements are very detailed. “The robot was able to imagine such detailed movements much better than he thought,” said Choi Soo Yeon, who directed the performance with the robot. Android directed three of the five tracks in the concert, including one that was co-conducted with Choi.
Researcher Lee Yong Joo, who studies traditional Korean music, stated that the robot’s movements follow the rhythm perfectly, while not “breathing”. He noted that this is quite important for music.
“It was a concert that showed that robots and humans can coexist and complement each other, not replace each other,” Choi said after the performance.
