Johnny Depp’s former manager, Jack Whigham, said in court he lost a $22.5 million contract after the actor’s ex-wife, Amber Heard, accused him of domestic violence. According to The New York Times, she was supposed to star in the sixth movie in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
The actor was removed from the franchise after an explanatory article by Heard was published in The Washington Post in December 2018. Depp’s lawsuit against his ex-wife claims the publication “destroyed his reputation and career.”
“It was impossible to get a studio movie for him after the writing,” Whigham said.
Depp’s defamation trial began on April 12. It is expected to take several weeks. At the hearing on May 2, Hurd’s defense said the cancellation of the $22.5 million payment agreement to Depp occurred prior to the article’s publication. He sought to prove that he was already cut from new films in the franchise after the actor’s “problematic behavior” during the making of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017).
Previously, the role of Hurd in Aquaman 2 was in the background of the trial with Depp diminished up to 10 minutes.
