In the movie, Efremov played the Soviet programmer Alexei Pajitnov, creator of the Tetris virtual puzzle. “The tape is almost two hours long, and despite such timing, its subject matter is refreshing – independent and dynamic and not inflated like some 10-episode projects,” writes The Guardian columnist Benjamin Lee. Lovia Gjarkje of The Hollywood Reporter says, “The director uses a complex game license struggle to create a robust and sometimes hilarious drama about capitalism, intellectual property, and the specter of the collapse of the Soviet Union.”
IndieWire review writer Kate Erbland noted that the film had flaws but did its job. “Not all pieces of the puzzle match up and the speed doesn’t increase over time, so the makers can borrow this from the game itself, but players can be cheered on and the story difficulty levels go up,” he wrote.
