A fact as a starting point: while there is absolute equality of men and women (as well as graduates) enrolled in an architecture degree, around 50-50, the reality is that after 25 years (recently completed) degree. All have proven quality and project solvency homes, plus a verified track record in most cases with awards and repercussions in national and international publications.

With these data, it was not a question of creating a demographic study of what female architects and male architects do when they complete their education, but it points to an undeniable fact: there is a significantly lower proportion of women. According to the number of architects, they are self-employed or partners. This does not have to indicate, a priori, any negative aspects, there are many architects leading teams in industries directly or indirectly linked to construction; There are many civil servants who are architects in relevant administrative positions. However, it shows a fact: the role of women with their own work continues to find many problems to compete on an equal footing with the current market model today.

All participating architects, in most cases managing multidisciplinary work teams and are professionals of recognized prestige; however, all report experiencing great difficulties when faced with the profession. Specifically, because they are the primary caregivers, but also because of the amount of prejudice that still exists today in a fundamentally masculinized industry. Rather than grieving (as they suggest, this question needs to be thought through more deeply and is, of course, becoming part of the great debates that underpin our society), they point to the need for “references” to exist. serves as a guide or inspiration for future generations. Likewise, architects like María Langarita demand the need to create general-level reconciliation plans where work schedules do not occupy the hours we all should devote to family.

Although these architects seem like the friendly face of architecture due to all their professional achievements, we should not forget the difficulties they had to endure in order to get here. Architect Silvia Alonso’s account was particularly noteworthy when she recalled how she had to spend a long day at the construction site working out construction details the day before she was born.

In any case, the purpose of this roundtable was not to share regrets or evoke compassion; rather, it serves as a reference. And as architect Maribel Requena points out, while it takes a lot more than a man to achieve the same thing, events like this can help us move towards so-called equality.
