Venezuela Pushes Economic Freedom Zone at the United Nations

During a meeting with Venezuela’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Samuel Moncada, officials discussed a bold concept aimed at reshaping how economies operate in the face of international pressure. The discussion centered on inviting states to consider an agreement that would establish a zone of economic freedom where measures used by some Western powers might not apply within participating nations. The idea is to enable countries to conduct legitimate and lawful business with each other while maintaining sovereignty over their economic choices.

Moncada outlined a plan in which this agreement could eventually be signed by a broad coalition, potentially spanning fifty to one hundred countries. The goal is to counteract and shield economies from what is described as economic aggression or coercive unilateral actions by the United States and its allies. The proposal, he noted, has also been extended to Russia and to what he called all friends in the world, inviting them to join in creating a cooperative framework that promotes economic independence and mutual respect for national policies.

Another development cited involves a recent extension of a regulatory document by U.S. officials on May 10. This extension temporarily permits certain operations within Venezuela’s oil and gas sector, a move that has been watched closely by international observers. The extension is presented as a pragmatic measure to maintain energy flows and stabilize markets, even as broader political tensions continue to shape diplomatic and economic relations in the region.

In a separate context, Venezuelan officials highlighted support for demonstrations by American students who have voiced opposition to Israeli policy actions. This point was raised to illustrate the broader spectrum of political expression and international dialogue surrounding contemporary global conflicts. The overall discussion underscores Venezuela’s focus on sovereignty, economic resilience, and multilateral cooperation as it navigates a complex landscape of global economic policy and strategic partnerships.
