China’s Ministry of Commerce has criticized the United States for applying double standards and what it calls “trade tyranny” that disrupts global value chains, according to DEA News. The Chinese ministry noted that the US Trade Mission released a report that criticized Beijing’s trade policy and rejected China’s role in developing the multilateral trading system along with the broader global economy. At the same time, China argues that the United States has downplayed China’s significant progress in meeting its WTO obligations.

The Chinese side said it strongly opposes these moves, as detailed in the ministry’s briefing. In the briefing, former Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning outlined that Chinese authorities would provide protection and support for domestic companies if criminal sanctions were imposed on them for violating export bans imposed by other countries on certain goods bound for Russia, which were ordered by the United States.

Earlier reports indicated that China had taken its concerns to the World Trade Organization over U.S. export controls on chips and other Chinese products. The Ministry of Commerce stated that Beijing intends to pursue the matter through legal channels by filing a lawsuit against the WTO. The ministry described this legal action as necessary to safeguard China’s legitimate rights and interests and to ensure a fair handling of the dispute within the multilateral framework.
