Ukraine’s energy ministers and local officials have highlighted the central role of nuclear power in the country’s energy mix. Ukrainian nuclear power plants are responsible for a significant portion of the nation’s electricity, according to statements issued by the Ministry of Energy through its Telegram channel.
Minister of Energy German Galushchenko noted that nuclear facilities contribute up to about 60 percent of Ukraine’s electricity. He stressed that the country’s electricity system remains fundamentally built on the output from nuclear power plants, underscoring their importance for energy security and stability.
The remarks come as Ukraine continues to manage its energy network amid ongoing disruptions in various regions. In Kherson, a power facility in the city controlled by Ukrainian authorities experienced damage following an explosion. Local authorities reported a brief outage, with electricity service being restored and repairs proceeding to secure the grid. Officials urged residents to conserve electricity where possible while restoration work continues to stabilize supply.
In regional and international discussions about energy resilience, Polish representatives have signaled readiness to support Ukraine by supplying electricity produced from coal. This potential cooperation is framed as part of broader efforts to ensure reliable electricity deliveries during periods of high demand and regional stress.
Earlier, Ukraine faced a reduction in energy production due to the ongoing challenges facing several large facilities. Authorities noted that the downturn was being addressed through planned maintenance, reallocation of capacity, and the fast adaptation of the system to evolving conditions. The focus remains on preserving steady power delivery to households and critical services while pursuing longer-term upgrades to generation, transmission, and storage capacity.
