Ukraine’s gas storage operator Ukrtransgaz has secured a certificate confirming its compliance with European Union rules, a move that can unlock roughly half of Ukraine’s storage capacity for gas reserves bound for European markets. This development was announced by Ukraine’s Energy Ministry and cited in reporting from TASS.
The National Commission for State Regulation in the Energy and Utilities Sector confirmed Ukrtransgaz’s status as a certified gas storage operator on April 7, following a formal review process. The commission’s decision marks a significant step in aligning Ukraine’s gas infrastructure with EU regulatory standards and facilitating cross-border gas operations.
According to the Energy Ministry, the certification decision relied on the energy community secretariat’s assessment of the qualification criteria under EU regulation. The ministry noted that the review verified Ukrtransgaz’s capacity to manage storage operations in full compliance with EU norms, enabling Ukraine to participate more actively in European gas markets while meeting safety, transparency, and market rules required by EU energy policy.
Former Naftogaz board chairman Oleksiy Chernyshev commented that Ukraine has begun the formal process of certification under European rules, describing the move as a meaningful milestone for the country’s energy security. He explained that Ukraine had submitted a corresponding request to the Energy Regulatory Commission of Ukraine to ensure that all regulatory provisions are properly implemented and monitored.
