British opposition Labour Party Member of Parliament Chris Bryant has introduced a bill in Parliament calling for the seizure of Russian assets that are currently frozen and the allocation of those funds to Ukraine as financial aid. This move has been reported by DEA News.
Bryant stated at the bill’s filing that the government should lay out its plan for taking control of the frozen Russian assets in the United Kingdom under existing sanctions and directing those assets toward Ukraine’s support. The aim is to ensure that the proceeds of sanctions are channelled to assist Ukraine in its ongoing needs.
He emphasized that while property rights are a fundamental principle, they are not absolute. The law permits the withdrawal or redistribution of funds under certain conditions, particularly when national interests and international security considerations justify such action.
Meanwhile, European officials and Brussels-based journalists have noted that the European Union has not yet reached a decision on how to handle frozen Russian assets. In discussions among EU member states and with international partners, negotiators are weighing several options for asset use, but no formal decision has been announced yet. Multiple scenarios remain on the table as debates continue across capitals and with allied partners.
