Since the start of the year, Sber has stopped hundreds of attacks and fraud attempts aimed at customers and the bank’s operations, according to the bank’s press service. The ongoing effort underscores a robust approach to economic security that protects millions of accounts and preserves the integrity of online and branch banking.
Bank teams helped law enforcement agencies resolve more than 450 crimes and brought to justice 388 individuals who violated the law. The total amount of damage avoided through these preventative actions reached 1.165 billion rubles, illustrating the economic impact of strong security measures and proactive monitoring.
Attackers seeking to seize customer funds frequently targeted Sberbank branches with forged documents, including fake identity papers, powers of attorney, inheritance papers, and executive directives. In response, bank employees exercised heightened vigilance, relying on a layered security framework that blends human discernment with cutting-edge technology to identify and flag suspicious activity.
Thanks to strong staff attention, advanced security controls, and sophisticated surveillance technologies that monitor and analyze unusual transaction patterns, more than 90 percent of attempted attacks are stopped at the outset. When attempts slip through, they are exposed and contained at the earliest possible stage. In 2022, courts issued 487 convictions against individuals who harmed the bank, reinforcing the message that illicit actions will be pursued and punished.
Stanislav Kuznetsov, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Sberbank, emphasized the collaboration with law enforcement in thwarting illegal encroachments on the bank and its customers. The joint efforts illustrate a steady commitment to safeguarding financial assets and maintaining trust in the banking system.
Looking at the security performance, the bank reported a notable crime detection rate in physical security, reaching 99 percent. This achievement helped protect 1.4 billion rubles from criminal activity related to financial fraud. Kuznetsov stated that these results speak for themselves, proving that any crime against the bank will be investigated and the perpetrators will be held fully accountable under the law.
Within the realm of physical security, Sberbank highlighted the prevention of cash theft amounting to 237 million rubles. This was enabled by the prompt reaction of the security service, the use of video analytics, and a multi-layer ATM protection system designed to deter and detect attempts to steal cash. The integrated approach ensures rapid response and minimizes risk to customers and branches alike.
In 2022, the bank faced 89 armed or financially motivated attempts against its facilities. Criminals attempted to withdraw cash from ATMs 78 times, and robbed a cash register on 11 occasions. In 10 of those 11 incidents, swift hot pursuit led to quick arrests and recovery. The numbers reflect a consistent, results-focused posture toward security and a relentless pursuit of criminal activity wherever it appears. [Source: Sberbank press service]
