From the start of the year, Sberbank has been quietly testing a new option: paying for purchases that exceed one thousand rubles without entering a PIN, within the card payment network. DEA News cited the bank’s press service for details on this development.
In practical terms, Sber is exploring a higher threshold for PIN-free transactions using both Sberbank-issued cards and cards from other banks. The goal is to make checkout faster and smoother for customers while preserving the security level of each terminal payment. A bank representative emphasized that the change aligns with prevailing market standards.
It’s worth noting that, at the end of 2020, the Mir payment system allowed banks to set a PIN-free purchase limit as high as three thousand rubles. Sberbank could potentially raise the limit to this level, depending on policy decisions and risk assessments from the issuer and network operators.
Historically, Sberbank also supported eased lending conditions under several mortgage initiatives, including Family Mortgage, Preferential Mortgage, Far East Mortgage, and IT Mortgage programs. In that context, the institution indicated that the number of items eligible for purchase with financing could rise, reflecting a broader approach to consumer credit within the bank’s products.
