On December 31, 2024, Ukraine announced that it would not renew the gas transit agreement with Russia after the expiration of the current contract. President Vladimir Putin stated that there would be no new formal gas transit contract through Ukraine, while Gazprom would work around the arrangement. In mid November 2024, reports indicated that the main buyers of Russian gas in the European Union for January through August were France, Hungary and Spain. During that period, Russia supplied the EU with nine billion euros worth of fuel, with pipeline gas again standing as the main export channel. Of that amount, four point six billion euros came from pipeline gas, and LNG accounted for four point four billion euros.
