Russia posted a landmark milestone in agricultural trade during 2023, with exports surpassing 45 billion dollars. This figure marks the first time such a level was recorded, according to statements attributed to Dmitry Patrushev, the Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation. The minister indicated that subsequent refinements to the calculations could push the number even higher, underscoring Russia’s position as a net exporter of agricultural products thanks to robust production volumes.

In 2022, revenue from agricultural exports stood at about 41.7 billion dollars. Projections earlier suggested it could reach around 45 billion dollars by 2024, a target set by a presidential decree issued by Vladimir Putin. The 2023 outcome appears to have already met that forecast, with the potential for further increases once additional calculations are complete, as estimated by the Ministry of Agriculture.

Prior to these developments, the federal state budgetary institution Agroexport, part of the Ministry of Agriculture, conducted an assessment of a new U.S. Congress bill focused on reducing reliance on Russian agricultural supplies. The analysis highlights proposed support for investments aimed at cutting dependency in key sectors, including grain, and underscores strategic shifts that could influence long-term trade and supply dynamics.

There have also been notable changes in trade policy related to agricultural products within Russia, such as the introduction of duty-free imports of chicken meat at an earlier stage, signaling ongoing adjustments to market access and competitive policies in the sector.
