Ahmad Saidmurodzoda, who leads Tajikistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs department focusing on the CIS, reported a notable rise in trade between Russia and Tajikistan. The figures indicate a stronger economic link and growing confidence in bilateral commerce, underscoring a shared interest in expanding cross-border exchanges beyond their traditional sectors. The news highlights a pattern of upward momentum that reflects ongoing negotiations, diversified partnerships, and strategic collaboration between the two countries.
In 2022, commerce between Russia and Tajikistan climbed by about 23.7 percent, reaching roughly 1.7 billion dollars. This growth translates to an increase of around 321 million dollars within the year, signaling a robust uptick in shipments, services, and investment flows. The rise illustrates how both sides are positioning themselves to leverage complementary strengths, including resource access, industrial capabilities, and regional supply chains, to broaden trade channels and reduce barriers to trade.
There is now a clear expectation that bilateral trade could push toward the 2 billion dollar mark by 2023, reflecting deliberate policy moves, enhanced market access, and a concerted push to deepen commercial ties. Officials emphasize creating a favorable environment for business, simplifying procedures, and aligning regulatory frameworks to support faster, more predictable transactions across borders.
Saidmurodzoda called for moving forward with major investment projects and urged stakeholders to tap into Tajikistan’s abundant natural resources. He highlighted that activities in mining, metallurgy, and petrochemical processing stand as strong catalysts for growth and could serve as powerful drivers for the Russian economy as well. The emphasis is on turning natural endowments into practical outputs that benefit both nations, from energy and materials to industrial services and job creation.
Earlier discussions with the International Islamic Development Bank outlined a 450 million dollar commitment to support priority economic initiatives in Tajikistan. The planned allocation targets green energy development, road construction, and improvements in education infrastructure. It also covers irrigation improvements for farming, the setup of textile facilities, the creation of logistics centers, and the production of halal goods. This funding package aims to accelerate modernization, improve competitiveness, and foster sustainable livelihoods for local communities while strengthening regional cooperation and supply chain resilience.
