Russia Enacts Reforms to Tax Legislation and Criminal Codes

The Kremlin has announced a new law that allows a criminal case for tax crimes to be closed once all debts, penalties, and fines are fully paid. The official document outlining this change has been published on the legal information portal.

In addition, the law amends the Russian Criminal Code to ease liability for certain offenses related to tax evasion and similar payments. The maximum penalty for these offenses is now capped at five years, down from six years in some cases.

Furthermore, the maximum prison term for concealing an organization’s funds and failing to pay taxes has been reduced from seven to five years. The penalty for an organization that evades paying mandatory social insurance contributions has been lowered from four years to three years.

The law is scheduled to take effect in ten days, after which the new provisions will apply to relevant cases and proceedings already in motion as well as those initiated afterwards.

Earlier reports indicated that President Putin had signed another law related to the procedures for paying insurance contributions to the armed forces in certain scenarios.
