Moldova Grants and Loans for Gas Purchases: EBRD Involvement

Moldova has decided to secure a loan totaling 165 million euros to support the purchase of natural gas. The relevant agreement received approval from the republic’s parliament, according to TASS reports.

The funds granted to Moldova will be channeled through the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), providing a financial underpinning for the energy initiative.

A government statement noted that MPs approved the framework agreement covering loans and grants within the Energy Security project.

Additionally, the Norwegian government has announced a grant of 34 million euros to Moldova to advance these energy security goals.

On December 17, the Moldovan government took steps to nationalize oil and gas fields in southern villages, signaling a shift in energy resource management within the country.

Earlier, on December 4, Moldovan Energy Minister Viktor Parlikov stated that the republic currently holds sufficient gas reserves to sustain a stable heating season through February 2024.

Previously, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused Moldova of not fully complying with gas agreements from 2021, reflecting ongoing tensions in regional energy cooperation.
