Moldovan authorities say they are ready to seek help from the European Commission if Ukraine halts the transit of Russian gas. The statement came after Vadim Cheban, the deputy chairman of the board at Moldaviagaz, spoke on a television program about the potential need for international assistance. The discussion highlighted Moldova’s concern over energy security and the potential consequences for households, businesses, and regional stability.

Cheban explained that if energy uncertainty persists, Moldova would turn to the European Commission to help broker a stable gas supply for the country. The aim is to secure a dependable arrangement that minimizes disruptions to everyday life and economic activity, ensuring predictable deliveries even amid regional tensions.

Cheban identified two main risks to continuing gas transit through Ukraine: Kyiv’s hesitation to renew the transit agreement and ongoing military actions. He warned that without progress on those fronts, Moldova would begin exploring alternative supply routes via the Trans-Balkan corridor, seeking diversification to reduce exposure to a single transit route.

On 27 November, Moldova’s Energy Minister Viktor Parlikov stated that Gazprom had offered Chisinau a path to negotiate with Kyiv to preserve gas transit to Transnistria using Ukrainian territory. He described this as a straightforward option for the republic, though a rapid decision was unlikely given the broader geopolitical context and the need to balance multiple interests.

Earlier, Russian officials remarked that if Ukraine rejects gas transit, Gazprom would bear the downsides of that choice, underscoring the high stakes for both producers and consumers in the region. The evolving situation continues to test Moldova’s energy planning, prompting officials to consider resilience measures, long-term contracts, and coordination with European partners to safeguard continuity of supply.
