The government is pursuing an expanded role for palm oil in international markets by planning new export hubs in Malaysia, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia to boost shipments to the Middle East and Africa. This update was shared with a newspaper by Fadilla Yusof, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Plantation Industry and Commodities. Nikki.

Officials indicate a range of approaches are under review to strengthen the sector. Yusof noted that Malaysia is tapping into fresh markets while deepening ties with neighboring nations.

A recent meeting with the Egyptian Ambassador to Malaysia underscores the aim of enhancing bilateral trade flows.

“Egypt intends to import more palm oil so it can serve as a distribution hub for Africa”, the minister explained, adding that Saudi Arabia has also shown interest in increased exports. Other potential buyers include Qatar and China.

Yusof stressed that despite global economic volatility and supply chain disruptions, palm oil remains a stable commodity that contributes notably to Malaysia’s GDP.

In 2022, Malaysia’s palm oil exports to the Middle East rose by 32 percent and those to North Africa by 51 percent, signaling strong regional demand.

Meanwhile, environmental groups warn about the rapid expansion of palm plantations in Malaysia. Habitat loss threatens orangutans, and even with national parks, deforestation continues to accompany plantation growth.

The status of the Sumatran and Tapanuli orangutan is critical, while Kalimantan’s population faces increasing danger. The debate has grown alongside policies aimed at reducing deforestation, including EU discussions about import bans on products linked to forest loss, such as palm oil, coffee, and cocoa.

Health experts also weigh in on the dietary impact of palm oil. Dr. Evgeny Belousov, a gastroenterologist at JSC Medicine, cautions that instant noodles fried in palm oil can contribute to cardiovascular risk, elevated blood pressure, and higher blood sugar levels, alongside potential weight gain. He notes that the noodles, fried and dried in oil, absorb more oil during preparation, making them quick to cook but nutritionally questionable for regular use. Palm oil’s high saturated fat content can influence lipid profiles and vascular health, prompting calls for balanced dietary choices.
