French Prime Minister announced the country’s record national debt 19:59

Prime Minister François Bayrou said that France has never had such a large external public debt in its entire history. This was reported by RIA Novosti.

“We need to realize our country’s excessive indebtedness and start reducing external debt. It grew by 12 percent under Emmanuel Macron,” the chief cabinet officer said in his speech to the National Assembly (lower house of parliament).

He described the country’s foreign debt as the “sword of Damocles” hanging over its social model.

According to the French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Research (Insee), the republic’s external debt exceeded 3.3 trillion euros and reached 113.7% of GDP. It increased by €72 billion in the second half of last year, now reaching a record level of €3.303 trillion.
