EU calls for ban on grain imports from Russia

Ministers of Agriculture of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland and the Czech Republic called on the European Commission to ban grain imports from Russia and Belarus to European Union (EU) countries. In this respect reported Lithuanian Ministry of Agriculture.

Lithuania initiated this objection. Ministers also asked European Commission members to organize cooperation between EU member states for the effective implementation of the ban across the EU.

The report states that ministers emphasized that measures should be taken to prevent grain stolen from Ukraine from entering the European market. According to Lithuanian Minister of Agriculture Kestutis Navickas, proceeds from the sale of grain are used by Moscow to finance a special military operation (SVO) and put pressure on the EU internal market by competing with the products of local producers.

Before that the European Parliament elongated Suspension of duties on exports of agricultural products from Ukraine. It was also reported that in case of a serious disruption in the EU market or the markets of one or more Community countries due to imports from Ukraine, the European Commission may take rapid measures if deemed necessary.
