The United States plans to open the first factory outside the country to produce Lockheed’s GMLRS guided long-range missiles, which were supplied to Ukraine during the conflict. The Wall Street Journal writes about this (WSJ) citing American and Australian officials.
According to the publication, production will begin at a military base on the outskirts of Sydney, Australia.
As explained by officials, the decision to open such an enterprise was made due to the fact that the American military industry is not able to meet the current demand and replenish stocks of military supplies due to increasing armed conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine. It was announced that partial assembly of GMLRS missiles will begin at the Lockheed Martin factory in the USA, and then they will be sent to Australia for additional assembly.
“Precision-guided munitions such as GMLRS and PrSM are becoming increasingly important,” says Jeff Jurgensen, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Defense.
US State Department in December approved Transfer of $2 billion worth of military training equipment to Australia.
