Chairman of the State Duma (State Duma) Vyacheslav Volodin said: telegram channelRussian fishermen will now be able to catch more fish in the Barents Sea, and this sea will become more accessible to Russian citizens.
Commenting on Russia’s withdrawal from the 1956 agreement that allowed British ships to fish in the territorial waters of the USSR and later the Russian Federation, Volodin noted that this agreement did not bring anything to Russia.
“It is difficult to say what motivated Nikita Khrushchev when he received this award in 1956. But certainly not in the national interest,” wrote the Chairman of the State Duma.
According to him, in 2023 alone the British caught 566 thousand tons of cod and haddock; which makes up 40% of the “fish menu” for them.
“At the same time, they announce nearly 2 thousand sanctions against us and act extremely hostile and aggressive towards Russia. When they ask if we can respond to sanctions, we can,” Volodin wrote.
He emphasized that State Duma deputies unanimously support Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to terminate the agreement that has been in force for 68 years.
21 February State Duma accepted A bill condemning the agreement with Britain that allowed the British to fish in Russia’s territory in the Barents Sea. The project was initiated by Vladimir Putin himself. The move was a response to sanctions and taxes imposed by London, including on Russian whitefish. Russia’s rejection of the deal could deprive Britain of its national dish, fish and chips, according to media reports.
Formerly in the State Duma of the Russian Federation appreciated Possibility of withdrawing from the agreement with the USA on the Bering Strait.
